Magnolia blooms with spaces to entertain

Baywest Homes' show home in Mahogany reflects luxurious estate living.

People who enjoy regularly hosting get-togethers will have strong preferences for certain characteristics within a home. A show home by Baywest Homes in southeast Calgary displays a model that ticks those boxes. The Magnolia is an estate three-bedroom, above-grade home with a front-drive garage reaching 2,845 square feet. It is on display in the award-winning lake community of Mahogany.

On the main floor, it’s an entertainer’s delight. The great room feels as if it’s designed in two parts: indoors and outdoors. The rear-facing great room sides on to a spacious deck separated by towering sliding glass doors. This creates a natural transition for gatherings to move to the fresh air when the weather supports it. The glass doors along with windows on the rear wall help cover the great room with natural light. Another great room strength is its 11-foot one-inch ceiling height highlighted by elegant ceiling beams.

The kitchen is luxurious and grand. This U-shaped cooking space boasts an abundance of counter space wrapped around a central island with an eating bar that seats at least three people. There’s generous space between the island and kitchen features along the wall, making it easy to move and pass other people. One kitchen wall features well-sized cabinets with glass fronts. This plays off of the sunshine that comes through a large window over the sink on the facing wall. A butler’s pantry with glossy subway tile and attached walk-through pantry gives the domestic chef significant support. These spaces reach a mudroom with a bench and several coat hooks.

Speaking of entrances, the foyer is set up for privacy. Beyond the immediate space, all sight lines are restricted. For people who work from home, a nine-foot four-inch by eight-foot four-inch office just off the kitchen offers a solution.

Every bedroom above grade features a walk-in closet. The largest, of course, belongs to the master bedroom, supporting multiple extensive wardrobes. This closet is accessed through the luxurious master ensuite. A chic free-standing tub and upscale glass-encased shower are among it high notes. There’s also a dual sink vanity with a considerable amount of surface space between the sinks. The master, itself, measures 15 feet six inches by 16 feet six inches and boasts a vaulted ceiling. A central bonus room offers a privacy buffer between the master and secondary bedrooms, which both sit along the rear-facing wall. A full bathroom, between these bedrooms — like the master suite — boasts a vanity with two sinks. This can be a timer-saver in the morning, allowing two children to prepare for their respective days at school at the same time.

In the developed basement, there’s another spot in which to gather, chat and relax. The rec area has space for large pieces of furniture and includes a walk-up bar. The basement also includes a 14-foot 10-inch by 12-foot five-inch bedroom, and space staged for yoga and other sorts of workouts. For further physical activity, residents can partake in water sports on the lake or walks along the community’s 22 kilometres of pathways.
