Great news for first-time home buyers in Canada! As of May 27, 2025, the federal government has introduced new legislation aimed at making homeownership more affordable - and it's already in effect.
Through the newly proposed First-Time Home Buyer GST Rebate, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be eliminated on new homes priced up to $1 million, and reduced on homes priced between $1 million and $1.5 million.
This rebate is designed to ease the upfront cost of buying a new home, especially for young Canadians, while also encouraging the construction of more housing nationwide. First-time buyers could save up to $50,000 on the purchase of a new home through this initiative.
The rebate is part of a broader plan expected to deliver $3.9 billion in tax savings over the next five years.
